When Spirits Stay After Unnatural Deaths

I MEET MANY earthbound spirits who died from murder or suicide. It’s not surprising when you think about it: These are the ones who most frequently choose not to go into the Light. They stay to seek justice or revenge (in the cases of those that were murdered), or because they are afraid of what punishment might await them in the Light (in the cases of suicides). I have come across ghosts who’ve spent all the time since their death attached to the person who wronged them, waiting for their chance to even the score. I have also encountered spirits who found the attorney assigned to represent the criminal and did whatever they could—misplacing files, erasing phone messages—to disrupt the case.

When I talk to these earthbound spirits, they are usually incredibly grateful that I can hear them and relay their stories, whether to family members who need closure or to others, such as law enforcement officials.

Working with Law Enforcement

Because I do encounter earthbound spirits who are the victims of murder, I have developed working relationships with law enforcement officials both locally and nationally. The first time I encountered a ghost who had died as a result of a violent crime, I passed along the information to contacts in my local police department. A few detectives there were open to hearing about the ghosts of any murder victims I might come across, so I continued to share information with them. As a result, there were times when the police were able to use the information I gave them to make progress on open cases. Over time, certain officers would ask me to keep particular victims in mind in case I happened to run across them in the course of my work.

In fact, I still consult a huge file of more than two hundred cold cases that I got after I told the police about one particular ghost I encountered. She was a young prostitute—just nineteen years old—who’d been murdered by a violent john. I received a call from a local woman who was very concerned about some changes in the behavior of her two daughters. Both girls, who had always been very obedient and pleasant, had become rude and disrespectful. Having the ghost around them had influenced them as much as if they had started hanging out with the wrong kind of crowd. Their dress had changed as much as their manners: While they used to wear preppy clothes—neat jeans with sweaters or polo shirts in pretty colors—they now favored all-black outfits accessorized with torn fishnets. Without their mother’s permission they’d acquired piercings and tattoos, and both had dyed their hair black. Not surprisingly, they had also started hanging out with a group of new friends whom their mother didn’t approve of at all.

Perhaps today this manner of dress and defiance might be attributed to typical teen angst, but I met this family well before music videos promoted provocative dressing and goth was considered a fashion statement.
